J. Ecan. Entomd 79: 14521458 (1986) ABSTRACï Resistance mechanisms of a strain (MSE) of Culex pipiens L., collected in sauthern France in 1979 and highiy resistant to chlorpynfos. were investigated by comparing the resistance characteristics to vanous organophasphates and carbamates in the absence or presence of synergists and determining the biochemical characteristics of four enzymes (esterases. glutathione-S-transferases, mixed function oxidases, and acetylcholinesterase) compareci with a susceptible strain and a chlorpyrifas-resistant strain (S54) collected in the same area in 1960 and 1974, respectively. Cblorpyrifos resistance in S54 was due to a detoxifying esterase as previously dexribed, whereas resistance in MSE was associateci with an acetylcholinesterase insensitive to the inhibition by chlorpyrifoxon and some carbamates (propoxur, carbosulfan. and carbaryl), and with an increase of oxidative metabolism.

Pirimiphos-methyl Resistance of Culex pipiens Populations (Diptera: Culicidae) in Central Tunisia: Status and Mechanisms Involved
In Tunisia, Culex pipiens plays a role in the high annoyance experienced by most urban cities, suburban and rural areas. Resistance to Pirimiphos-methyl was analyzed in five populations of Culex pipiens collected in central Tunisia. Bioassays were performed over different larvae samples. All samples were resistant to Pirimiphos-methyl. The study of the mechanisms involved in this resistance sho...
متن کاملRecent emergence of insensitive acetylcholinesterase in Chinese populations of the mosquito Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae).
Organophosphate/carbamate target resistance has emerged in Culex pipiens L. (Diptera: Culicidae), the vector of Wuchereria bancrofti and West Nile virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus) in China. The insensitive acetylcholinesterase was detected in only one of 20 samples collected on a north-to-south transect. According to previous findings, a unique mutation, G119S in the ace-1 gene, ex...
متن کاملEnzymatic Characterization of Insecticide Resistance Mechanisms in Field Populations of Malaysian Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae)
BACKGROUND There has been no comprehensive study on biochemical characterization of insecticide resistance mechanisms in field populations of Malaysian Culex quinquefasciatus. To fill this void in the literature, a nationwide investigation was performed to quantify the enzyme activities, thereby attempting to characterize the potential resistance mechanisms in Cx. quinquefasciatus in residentia...
متن کاملInvestigation of Pirimiphos-methyl Resistance Status of Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) Populations in Northern Tunisia
This article reports Pirimiphos-methyl resistance status of Culex pipiens populations harvested in four breeding sites in Northern Tunisia. Our results showed the resistance of all samples to Pirimiphos-methyl. The RR50 ranged from 3.3 1 to 62.1. The sample collected from Tazarka had the highest resistance among all studied populations. This status could be explained by its frequency of mortali...
متن کاملDevelopment of Resistance to Chlorpyrifos in Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) Population under Temephos Selection Pressures
Development of resistance to chlorpyrifos in Culex pipiens population from Tunisia under temephos selection pressures was investigated. The objective of this study was to follow the evolution of resistance responses in Culex pipiens larvae under laboratory conditions. The selection to temephos caused a significant increase of resistance to chlorpyrifos levels. Indeed, the LD50 resistance rate i...
